In response to the dissolution of the main opposition and the perceived deterioration of human rights and democracy in Cambodia, the United States and European Union have taken measures in an attempt to reverse Cambodia’s democratic backsliding.
The EU warned that it would withdraw its trade preferences given to Cambodia, if Cambodia could not reverse the perceived deterioration of its human rights situation. The country should not underestimate the potential severe impact of the withdrawal on its garment industry.
The relations between Cambodia and Thailand can be appropriately labelled as a love-hate relationship. Given their current political, economic and diplomatic relations, both countries can enhance their generally troubled relationship through a reciprocal exchange of mutual respect.
